If you’re just visiting this page and are wondering where the old site went, it’s here. Here’s the email I just sent explaining how to register with the new site.
Greetings BNIers!
I’m moving forward with the new BNI Embarcadero website and I need you all to go and register. If you’re pressed for time, please just do step #1 below so that we know who has signed up and so that you’ll get the emails from the group. If you need the old site, it’s here (http://www.bniembarcadero.com/old).
:: FYI :: This new site uses WordPress–software I know and love. It’s what I use for 90% of the sites I build. Our old BNI site used Drupal, which I thought was going to be more powerful (silly me … ), but it was also just plain unfriendly and clunky. WordPress is open source software which means there are zillions of developers out there working on it and creating new tricks. If you’d like to see some of the features we can add on (maybe there are some useful plugins for the BNI site?), have a look here: http://wp-plugins.net. There are over 900, get a cup of tea.
Here’s how to register for the new site (step 1) and add content (steps 2 and 3):
~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~
1.) Register (mandatory)
~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~
This will register you with the website so that you will be able to (1) receive emails, (2) post content, (3) post comments, (4) add events, etc.
A.) Go to http://www.bniembarcadero.com
B.) In the far right sidebar under Admin, click Register.
C.) Create a user name (first name is fine except for you Mike’s and Kevin’s … ) and put in your email address.
D.) Go check your email for your password.
E.) In the email, there will be a link (http://www.bniembarcadero.com/wp-login.php) where you can log in with your user name and new password.
F.) Once you’re logged in, click Profile in the top menu bar.
G.) Fill in: first name, last name, website, and update (change) your password. You don’t need to fill in the “About Yourself.” Click Update Profile at the bottom right.
H.) Once it’s saved, you can now go change your “Display name publicly as” if you like (to your full name or first name etc.).
That’s it, thank you. If you’d like to add some more information about your company, go on to step 2.
~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~
2.) One page about your company (optional)
~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~
If you’d like to add to the site something about your company (see my example here: http://www.bniembarcadero.com/likoma), follow these steps:
A.) If you’re not still logged in, log back in using your new user name and password (http://www.bniembarcadero.com, upper right, Login).
B.) Click Write in the top menu bar, this will open the Write Post editing screen.
C.) There are blue bars in the right sidebar. Find Categories and if it’s not open, click the ” + ” sign.
D.) Uncheck the Uncategorized category and check the Members category.
E.) Under the Category bar is another bar called Post Status, open this one up and check the box (circle) for Sticky.
F.) Back to the left, give your post a title. For this example, I suggest your company’s name.
G.) In the Post editing area, type in some information about your company. A line, a paragraph, a short novel, it’s up to you.
H.) If you’re feeling daring, you can upload an image and insert it into the editing screen (but I’ll write more about this at a later date, some help here: http://www.likoma.com/wp201).
I.) When you’re done with your text, click Publish at the bottom right of the editing area.
That’s it. Ready for more? Step 3 is adding a Blog or Event or News.
~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~
3.) Blog (optional)
~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~
Pretty much the same as step 2, except:
A.) Check the box for Blog, Event, or News as appropriate.
B.) Don’t click Sticky in the Post Status area.
C.) If it’s an event, open the sidebar box called Post Timestamp and put in the date of the event, including time (using 24-hour clock).
That’s it.
When you’re done, you should have an entry such as one of these:
http://www.bniembarcadero.com/author/bradley/
http://www.bniembarcadero.com/author/gil-zeimer/
http://www.bniembarcadero.com/author/betty/
This is separate from what’s below, but there’s a new roster page here (http://www.bniembarcadero.com/roster — no, you can’t edit it).
I have 43 seconds left for questions? Anyone? ;-)
Best regards,
- Bradley

Bradley:
Terrific job on migrating the old site, putting a new front end on this one and making it a workable, easy-to-update site for which our entire chapter can be proud!
You say “Likoma,” I say “Kudos!”
