Maria Poroy forwarded me her newsletter from Peter Montoya that had a section about how to be “an authority in your industry” and to show that expertise by writing articles on your website. Here’s part of the newsletter below. Thanks for sending, Maria.
Most books and magazine articles these days feature resource lists or sections devoted to websites where readers can find additional information. When you figure that being listed in, say, three books might put your business and Personal Brand in front of half a million readers or more, it’s worth finding a way to become a reader’s resource. But how do you get authors to include you in their work?
The best way is quite simple: be an authoritative source of information. Unlike in the old days, today the vast majority of book authors and magazine writers do all their research on the Internet. So when they search under a topic, they have a chance of finding your website. Here are a few ways to make sure that happens:
- Optimize your site with keywords in the underlying code and the page text. You want your site to talk plenty about the subjects on which you are an expert, so search engines like Google and Yahoo can find you.
- Fill your site with articles about your field of expertise. The more you have, the more likely you’ll meet a writer’s search criteria. Hire a ghostwriter to write you one new article a week and in a year, you’ll have 50+ original articles to tempt authors.
And it doesn’t hurt to meet writers and be quoted in the news media as an expert source. The more visible you are, the more authoritative you will appear to be.
